Our Roles as Leaders
Many articles are being written about the importance of the leadership
roles women have taken on to change the course of this city, state
and country. African American women have become leaders in government,
business, church and etc. As great as these accomplishments are we
must not fail to remember the history of the African American women
who risked their lives for our freedom.
African American women have always been influential in how a movement
was birth into a society. Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Katy Ferguson
and many others can be credited with being leaders who risked their
lives for the freedoms we enjoy today. These women were not concerned
with the fame or fortune that came with being a leader. Rather, they
saw this as an opportunity to birth life to an enslaved people and
they moved with compassion to bring it to pass.
They saw their roles as necessary opportunities to change a nation
of people. They knew there was a higher calling on their lives and
they were determined to answer the call regardless of the risk. The
legacy they left behind is one that we are now being called upon to
complete. It is our turn to free a nation, who has become enslaved
to a system which seeks to destroy and imprison the mind.
African American women are being called upon again to birth another
movement. Our society has placed us in key roles of leadership and
we accept the challenge. We will make sure every child awakens to
the opportunity to live their dream. We will lay aside selfish motives
and embrace new ways to nurture, love and encourage. We will risk
our lives for freedom in the roles we have today to ensure the life
of children who stand in harms way.
